Check the person behind the offer
Ask for the exact name first. A logo or a treatment page is not enough detail for a useful lookup.
- The record can tell you
For a named doctor, state medical boards publish any penalties they imposed and whether the license is current.
- The record cannot tell you
A board record without penalties does not establish how well a doctor cares for patients.
Get enough detail to find the right person
- Get both the license number and the doctor’s full name.
- Ask which state’s record to use for the planned visit.
- Match the name and license details with the public entry.
- Read whether the license is current and open any linked record of penalties imposed by the board.
For a remote visit, location still matters
As of 26 September 2026, federal health guidance requires a doctor to meet the rules in the place where they work.
For the place where the patient is located, the doctor needs either a license or another form of permission.
If you will be traveling, give the service your location for the actual appointment, rather than just your home address.
