Plan a conversation
Would a screen or a room fit the visit?
Compare what each appointment would involve, including the plan for anything it cannot cover.
- In a room
Ask what will happen at the visit, what records to bring and whether any tests are proposed. Include travel and time away from work in your own comparison.
- Over a screen
Telehealth means care discussed at a distance, through video, phone or online exchanges. Ask how to reach the doctor with a follow-up question.
The screen does not lower the standard
A remote appointment must meet the standard expected in a room, says the medical boards’ guidance.
The guidance also calls for an examination, tests or a referral when the assessment needs them.
Ask: “If you cannot assess this fully online, what happens next?”
What about an online form?
The Federation of State Medical Boards links individual state boards as a group. Its guidance reviewed on 26 September 2026 opposed prescribing based only on a form that asks everyone the same questions.
Its guidance allows online interviews where the doctor can ask further questions based on your answers and gather enough information.
Those board recommendations are guidance; enforceable online-care rules differ by state as of 26 September 2026.
A useful inquiry asks who reviews the answers, how they can ask more, and how you can ask more too.
